This work is from 1966, a period during which Hartung began using a spray gun to apply paint. During these years, he created the so-called "Clouds" series, which allowed him to achieve atmospheric effects through the tiny droplets that settled on the canvas.
In this work, Hartung sprays black paint onto a background painted with fine orange and yellow stripes. Then, he scrapes the paint while it is still wet, removing it with a brush or the handle of the paint, depending on the desired effect.
And here, precisely, these hatched and swirling scrapes reveal his distinctive graphic style while simultaneously uncovering a luminous yellow underlayer, thus creating these splendid effects of volume and movement.
