Albert Marquet and Marseille enjoyed a close artistic relationship. Marquet visited the Mediterranean city on several occasions, notably in 1916 with his friend Henri Matisse.
He was captivated by the light, the colors and the animation of the port, which he painted from his hotel room or from the heights of the city.
Marquet captured the essence of Marseille, highlighting contrasts and harmonies. His landscapes of Marseille are among his most appreciated works and are exhibited in many museums.
