In the Szafran jungle
Ever since their discovery in Zao Wou-Ki’s workshop, Szafran was fascinated by philodendrons, their perennial character and their leaves marked with a sustained and varnished green. Philodendrons invaded the space and became one of his favorite subjects in his studio in Malakoff, among the capharnaum of unusual objects and the pastel stall worthy of a color merchant. Szafran opted for paper and watercolor to render their texture more luminous.
We presented – and sold – a work representing this emblematic subject of San Szafran in the “VERT, Palettes de Printemps” exhibition (GREEN, Spring Palettes). You can see it in the online catalog.
A retrospective will be dedicated to this mysterious and silent artist at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris in Autumn 2022 :
“Sam Szafran. Obsessions of a painter”
Three years after his death, the Musée de l’Orangerie sheds light on the artist’s existential subjects – studios, staircaises and foliage – which all have his immediate environment in common.
This is the first exhibition dedicated to Sam Szafran organized by a French museum for 20 years.
Exhibition from September 28th, 2022 to January 16th, 2023
