Nicolas de STAËL 1913-1955
Dimensions with frame:
38,7 x 40 cm – 15.23 x 15.4 in.
The "Marine" (seascape) we are presenting is characteristic of 1952, when the artist sought, through simplification, to capture the essence of what he saw.
The inky blue marine horizon divides the painting into two parts. The sand and the sea reveal a cloudy sky. The work is as if "layered." The artist "stacks" the elements represented in the form of horizontal bands alternating in tone. He stretches the paste with a knife in a straight line. He "sculpts" his canvas to give body and movement to the natural elements.
This reconciliation between abstract composition and landscape would become emblematic of the ambivalent way in which the artist grasped the motif, leaving its meaning open.
