An informal painter, Jean Fautrier - even in his figurative period - brought out the light in objects.
The most advanced colorist of his time, he expressed them with a great mastery. The years 1926 to 1929 are considered the most sumptuous of this period.
This painting is a pivotal work, between the years 1925 and those inspired by the Resistance, the series of ‘Hostages’ circa 1943, in which he gave in to “hautes pâtes” (high pastes).
