Maurice de VLAMINCK 1876-1958
With frame:
85 x 106 cm – 33.46 x 41.73 in.
This landscape of Chatou by Vlaminck concentrates the strength and serenity of the Seine into a single motif. The bridge, positioned on the left like an architectural anchor, organizes the composition and leads the eye toward a village with warm rooftops, nestled against a fringe of trees whose green mass echoes the planes of the sky. The water, a calm mirror, presents the scene in a double reading where the reflective surface becomes a pictorial space in its own right.
The brushstrokes are broad and energetic; the colors-ochres of the rooftops, deep greens, nuanced blues-are applied with an economy of means that nonetheless maintains a great chromatic intensity.
One recognizes Vlaminck's transition after his Fauvist years: the gesture retains its vigor, but the palette becomes more restrained, the construction of the work gains in density and structure. The painting plays on the contrasts between the solidity of the built forms and the fluidity of the reflections, between the strength of the line and the tranquility of the atmosphere.
