Although Georges Seurat is known to the public for having invented Divisionism, his work is not limited to his colorful oils... His rare "black and white" drawings in Conté crayon remind us that this was his first mode of expression which would later influence generations of artists.

Seurat abandoned academic drawing techniques; the contours of the young woman were no longer defined by lines but by the delicate rubbing of the pencil on grainy paper.

The “Promeneuse au manchon” (Walker with a Muff) thus appears to us as a silhouette enveloped in shadow and light, in a mysterious atmosphere.

If this drawing is indeed preparatory to the monumental painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte", it becomes, through the play of shadows and shades, an almost spectral vision, where black and white are enough to suggest a volume and even a presence...: our Walker with a Muff already announces the hieratic monumentality of the characters of La Grande Jatte.

Our drawing, admired by Paul Signac, who kept it in his personal collection, shows that Seurat was not only a color theorist, but also an absolute master of chiaroscuro so modern that his influence continues to this day.
