Brilliant arcs and circles, vibrant colors… Sonia Delaunay (also known as Sonia Delaunay-Terk) designed this cover for the exhibition catalog of her works at the Nya Konstgalleriet in Stockholm. This style, with its saturated colors, was already characteristic of her work at this early stage. It would reappear in the diversity of her creations (paintings, ceramics, fashion, set design, etc.) throughout her career.
The 1916 Swedish exhibition was one of Sonia Delaunay's first major international exhibitions outside of France. Its aim was to introduce her work to the Scandinavian avant-garde market.
This piece for the catalogue showcased her colorful style. The artist skillfully blended abstraction and figuration in a clever exercise of self-promotion…:
exploration of colors and shapes… we also find successively the name
of the artist and her adopted city -Paris-, as well as the name and
address of the Stockholm gallery presenting the exhibition!
