Dear Friends,
This week we continue our ‘One Minute’ series with Derain and sculpture,
one of the richest and most secret aspects of this work.
Let us introduce you to this facet of his talent…
Françoise and Florence Chibret-Plaussu
One minute with André Derain
Open to all cultures and universally aware, André Derain participated – among others – in the birth of modern sculpture alongside Matisse and Picasso.
In 1907 he worked with a wide variety of materials: wood, stone, metal and clay.
In 1938 Derain discovered a clay deposit suitable for sculpting under a fir tree uprooted by a storm on his property in Chambourcy. He commenced a series of heads, masks and figurines. He had several kilns installed and monitored firing himself.
In 1959, on the advice of Giacometti and the publisher Pierre Cailler, Madame Derain, the painter’s widow, had 70 terracotta pieces cast in bronze. We are happy to showcase some examples of these works.
We find the resonance of a mixture of Mediterranean, Eastern, African and Chinese cultures interpreted with an inventive verve and a spontaneous imagination that highlight the sculptor’s unique gifts.
We recommend a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, which exhibits the complete series of bronze sculptures as well as a remarkable collection of oils by André Derain.
The artist is also widely presented in the new tour of the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM).
Finally, let us not forget Michel Charzat’s fascinating book ‘Derain, the Thunderstruck Titan’ published by Hazan.
You can discover these sculptures at our gallery.
