We continue to experience painting with you in a new way and are pleased to propose ‘One minute with Eugène Boudin’, through a work full of charm entitled ‘Le bassin de Deauville’ from 1877.

One minute with Eugène Boudin
A pioneer in open-air painting at a time when official painting was frozen in convention and produced in a workshop, Boudin declared:
‘three strokes of a brush in nature are better than two days at an easel’.
In this view of Deauville, Boudin is indeed the ‘King of Skies’ as Corot called him, he pursues an ideal:
‘to swim through the sky – to grasp the delicacies of the clouds, to suspend the masses of the background and to make the azure erupt’.
Who better than Boudin could paint one of these cloudy skies on which stands a flotilla of finely detailed schooners as freely?
This delicate painting is the very essence of a typical Norman sky of which Boudin, an instinctive impressionist, has become the incomparable master.
His quivering touch exalts the values of sketching and suggestion, effects that the impressionists, and especially Monet, who was one of his friends, would amplify.
