This work is similar to the two large versions of “Seasons of Life” in the Musée d’Orsay and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Small in size but of identical proportions, it evokes the pure and allegorical world of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) as well as the Japanese influence, central to the work of the Nabi group.

The definition and differentiation of the faces, the yellow trees which, here, accentuate the stiffness or, on the contrary, the movement of, each figure, as well as the treatment of the background where reliefs are outlined, evoke more particularly the painting of the Musée d’Orsay.
Reduced to mid-body and as if stripped of the clothing details and feminine elegance that hold the viewer’s eye in the “Seasons”, the figures are closer together, perhaps to the point of physical contact, which is exceptional for Roussel at the time.
Only the absent gaze of the older woman on the left introduces a psychological distance which is countered by the attitude of the young woman on the right. Whilst still evoking a theatrical performance, the scene is more intimate and intense.

Paul Guillaume (1891-1934) was one of the greatest dealers and collectors of modern art of the twentieth century, a large part of whose collection is presented at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. In his Parisian gallery, he exhibited Soutine, Modigliani and Fautrier among others and was one of the first to present African art.
Paul Guillaume’s collection, one of the most important in Europe, modified after his death by his wife Domenica, who remarried in 1938 to the architect Jean Walter, was purchased by the State with usufruct. It includes 16 Cézanne, 23 Renoir, 5 Modigliani, 12 Picasso, 10 Matisse, 27 Derain and 22 Soutine. This fabulous collection was not definitively integrated into the walls of the Orangerie des Tuileries until after Domenica’s death in 1977.
In 1925, Jean Fautrier became the true precursor of informal art. He was defended by the dealers Jeanne Castel and Paul Guillaume, with whom he signed an exclusive contract in 1927. He was well received by the critics and the Parisian literary milieu, in particular by the young André Malraux.
Fautrier went through a period of research that he described as a “season in hell”. He produced a lyrical work, series of landscapes and black nudes. He creates engravings for the illustrated edition of “Dante’s Inferno” prepared by Gallimard. The economic crisis hit the art market hard in the 1930s and Paul Guillaume broke his contract with Fautrier.

Sam Francis favors painting on paper. Very famous in the United States, he is quite rare on the French scene. He maintained privileged relations with France where he lived from the end of the 1940s and where he met many American artists of the “action painting” movement.
He became friends with Jean-Paul Riopelle and was supported by Claude Duthuit, Matisse’s grandson. Partisan of a “dynamic abstraction” and in opposition to the pictorial tradition, the artist decided to paint only the background of the canvas by removing the figures.
